Silvertip (red fir)

A tiered, silvery-blue fir with strong branches for ornaments.

Silvertip is a form of California red fir, native to the high Sierra Nevada. Its branches grow in widely spaced tiers, and the needles have a silvery cast that gives the tree its name.

The open tiers and strong branches make silvertip a favorite for showing off ornaments, especially large or heavy ones. It’s less common at local farms than Douglas fir, so if you want one, check ahead.
