Crest Ranch

Since 1948. On the Santa Cruz side, up Empire Grade and Bonny Doon Road.

Crest Ranch has been growing Christmas trees on Empire Grade since 1948, which makes it the oldest choose-and-cut farm still operating in California. It sits above Bonny Doon, a few miles up from Santa Cruz.

The 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fire burned through much of the area, and the farm has been replanting since. The season tends to be short. It usually opens the weekend before Thanksgiving and closes around the weekend before Christmas.

Before you go

Mountain roads up here are narrow and winding, and cell service can drop out. Leave extra time, wear shoes that can handle mud, and bring gloves plus rope or straps in case you need to tie the tree down yourself. See the best time to visit and the planning guide.
